Four riders risk exclusion from the Tour due to yellow cards
Yesterday’s stage didn’t just rob us of Philipsen’s upcoming sprints—it also jeopardized the Tour futures of four riders
Yesterday’s stage was extremely tense, and this was confirmed not only by the many crashes and the riders’ behavior visible on TV, but also by the riders themselves after crossing the finish line. Above all, Girmay said he didn’t care about the result and was simply happy to have made it through without getting caught up in any crashes.
The situation was further confirmed by the Tour de France jury, which decided to intervene and severely penalize four riders for what happened yesterday.
Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and Edward Theuns (Lidl-Trek) received a yellow card (along with a fine of 500 Swiss francs) for their behavior during the intermediate sprint, where Philipsen was the one who paid the highest price, having to abandon the race after crashing.
Davide Ballerini (XDS Astana) and Danny Van Poppel (Redbull Bora-hansgrohe) also received a yellow card and a 500 Swiss franc fine for an “irregular sprint in the final sprint”. All four riders will need to be extremely cautious in the upcoming stages and sprints, as another yellow card would mean exclusion from the race.
Additionally, Luka Mezgec was fined 500 Swiss francs for discarding waste outside the designated zones.
