We’re only at the beginning of the Tour de France, and Daniel Benson — a well-known journalist in the cycling world — has dropped a transfer bombshell that could reshape the Grand Tours in the coming seasons. Remco Evenepoel is reportedly closer than ever to joining Red Bull – BORA hansgrohe, which would mean saying goodbye to Soudal Quick-Step, the team with which he turned professional and has raced for his entire career so far.

According to Benson’s sources, the deal is 70–80% done (one side involved in the negotiations is more cautious with estimates, while the other is slightly more confident). There’s no signature yet, but the deal is reportedly nearly finalized, with the Belgian expected to sign a contract through 2030. Since Evenepoel is under contract with Soudal until 2026, Red Bull would need to “buy him out.”

A preliminary agreement is already in place for the Olympic champion’s personal contract with the German team. Additionally, Mattia Cattaneo is also expected to make the move (signing a three-year contract). His transfer is linked to Evenepoel’s, though it’s not yet clear — according to Benson — whether it’s a direct part of the “Evenepoel deal” or not.

This is the full story as reported by Benson in his Substack.
