For this reason, Jonas Vingegaard — who rarely lines up for one-day races — is expected to be at the start for yet another showdown with Pogacar, aiming to claim a rainbow jersey that would mean a great deal. Speaking about his possible participation was the Danish national coach, Morkov, in an interview with Feltet. Here’s what he said:

“The fact that Jonas is in the Worlds has been in the plans since the start of the season. When I spoke with him last winter, Jonas made it clear to me that he was very motivated for the Worlds. Of course, with so many commitments ahead, there’s no point in making selections too far in advance. But Vingegaard is at a point in his career where the rainbow jersey matters a lot to him. Also, the route suits him, so it’s clear that being there is a real possibility for him.

The course is very suitable for him, especially considering that one of the key aspects will be the altitude. That’s something Jonas has shown in the past that he likes, given his physical characteristics. With the Vuelta, Jonas won’t have the chance to prepare at altitude. But I still believe the Vuelta is an excellent preparation for him, also because someone like Vingegaard can naturally feel comfortable at altitude. I think everything’s fine as it is.”
