Vuelta distorted again: finish shortened by 8 km and no final climb, here’s why

No way: this Vuelta keeps being completely distorted by the protesters’ demonstrations. This time the organizers decided to still award the stage to a rider, but by completely redesigning the finale.

Egan Bernal ended up taking the win, but instead of the big finale with an 8-kilometer climb as the finish, the stage was concluded at the foot of the climb. A situation that was extremely exciting (both with the Bernal vs. Landa duel in the breakaway and within the peloton) was thus completely downsized and nullified. The announcement of the cut? It came with about 16 km to go, when the stage was practically over.

The cause remains the same: the presence of a huge number of protesters on the final ascent, which prevented the cyclists from finishing safely. All this despite a significant police presence. Now the question arises: what could happen in the next stages, which are increasingly at risk given the precedents that keep fueling the protests.
