Roglic speaks out on Pogacar’s World Championship, commenting on Evenepoel’s arrival and his own future
The words of Pogacar’s lieutenant in one of his last interviews before the World Championship race
Slovenia is expected to play a leading role in Sunday’s road World Championship. It couldn’t be otherwise when you line up with Tadej Pogacar as captain and domestiques of the caliber of Primoz Roglic, Matej Mohoric, and others. In addition, the team will be able to count on nine riders—the maximum number allowed—making it easier for Slovenia to control the race.
The extremely tough course promises plenty of spectacle nonetheless, and Primoz Roglic spoke about it in a recent interview with 24ur.com, making it clear that one of the priorities will be to give Pogacar freedom, just like at last year’s Worlds. Among the topics touched on by the Slovenian were also the arrival of Evenepoel in his team and his possible retirement, which is inevitably drawing closer. Below are his answers on the mentioned topics:
ON THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP – “Slovenia with two riders on the World podium? From your lips to God’s ears… we have the privilege of competing with nine riders. We’d probably all sign for a repeat of the 2024 result. The race will no doubt be very tough. We can all see how Tadej has been riding lately—we just need to give him space and not hold him back too much. For the rest of us, it will be a big battle just to reach the finish line.”
ON EVENEPOEL’S ARRIVAL AT RED BULL – “It’s fantastic that Remco has joined. Results won’t all depend on me. He’s young and motivated, he’ll be able to take on a bigger role, and I’ll be able to calmly seek out the opportunities and challenges that await me.”
HOW MUCH LONGER WILL HE RACE? – “If we knew the answer to that question, it would be easier for all of us. Time will tell, the environment will give us clear enough signals, and then we’ll make the best move when the moment comes. For now, I just hope there’s enough fuel in the tank, because a very tough race in Africa awaits us.”
