Evenepoel’s bike problems remain a mystery: “The first one broke, but for the second I think it was mostly frustration…”
The Belgian team’s mechanic spoke about Evenepoel’s bike problems
Evenepoel’s race ended with an excellent second place. We don’t know if the Belgian would have been able to beat Pogacar under normal conditions, but what is certain is that Remco fought really hard against mechanical problems to secure the podium. The first bike broke because of a pothole, while the second one remains a mystery.
According to the Belgian team’s mechanic, Kloeck, the second bike—the black one—had nothing wrong with it. So, in his opinion, the second technical stop (the kicking and the one-minute wait) was unnecessary and caused only by frustration. We don’t know if that was really the case, but we do know that Remco complained about the saddle height, while for the mechanic—who spoke to Het Nieuwsblad—everything was fine.
Here are Kloeck’s words explaining both situations:
THE FIRST BIKE – “The saddle of his first bike broke after hitting a pothole just before Mount Kigali. Remco kept riding with a broken bike for a long time. The front part of the saddle dropped by two centimeters. The clamp broke and the saddle tilted downward. Nothing could be done.”
THE SECOND BIKE – “We measured it three more times, but the saddle was at the same height as his other bike. We’ll soon find out exactly what was wrong, but I believe it was mostly frustration. He lost a lot of time unnecessarily because of this.”
