Yesterday in Kigali and Wednesday at the European Championship time trial: Evenepoel’s crazy journey to race again the day after tomorrow
The Belgian doesn’t want to miss the European Championship time trial (just 72 hours after the World Championships in Kigali)
Yesterday the silver medal in the World Road Race, in less than 48 hours the European Championship time trial: Remco Evenepoel is trying to pull off a crazy journey. After spending more than a week in Africa between the time trial and the road race, the Belgian is attempting to be at the start of Wednesday’s European Championship time trial. The problem?
Kigali is about 9,650 kilometers in a straight line from Loriol-sur-Drôme, where the European Championships will be held. According to Sporza, the plan is to leave tonight with a first direct flight to Ethiopia, then a second flight to Marseille, where he should land on Tuesday morning. From there, a 2–3 hour drive is scheduled, arriving around 1 p.m. at the exact location where, 24 hours later, he will have to race.
Also on Tuesday, Evenepoel is expected to do a first recon of the course, followed by the press conference in the evening, and then finally, the race the next day. At that point, we’ll see how much Sunday’s efforts, followed by this incredible tour de force, will weigh on his legs, especially considering he’ll be racing against athletes like Ganna, who have remained in Europe over the past few weeks.
A different story for Tadej Pogačar, who will not take part in the time trial but only in Sunday’s road race. To have more time to rest, the Slovenian already flew out yesterday evening.
