It was only the second stage of this Tour de France, but just like yesterday, the spectacle did not disappoint. Between the terrible weather conditions at the start and the wind later on, it turned out to be an extremely tough day—and the winner could only be a champion like Mathieu Van der Poel. Behind him, despite the uphill finish not being very steep, came Tadej Pogacar and especially Jonas Vingegaard. Here are the words of the three protagonists after today’s stage:

VAN DER POEL“It was really tough, the final part was harder than I expected. I was very motivated—after four years without a win here at the Tour… it was finally time for this second victory. Many said I was the favorite, but seeing who was ahead on the climb, I think I really did a great job.”

POGACAR“I’ve already won two Tours, but in six Tour de France appearances, I think I’ve only worn the polka-dot jersey once. So yes, if I remember correctly, tomorrow will be just my second ever day in this climber’s jersey. Honestly, I can’t wait because I like it—but more importantly, people love it. It’ll be a great feeling to race in this jersey. It was a beautiful stage. There was everything: rain, stress, danger, short climbs. A classic Tour stage. I felt good in the finale, and as a team, we rode well—but Mathieu (Van der Poel) was stronger. Chapeau to him. As for me, I’m super happy with second place.”

VINGEGAARD“I did two bunch sprints, so now I think I’m a sprinter. I’ve never finished third in a sprint like that before, so it’s a great result. I came in behind two of the best riders on this kind of terrain, so I think I can be satisfied. Mathieu was clearly the strongest. Tadej tried to overtake him, but Van der Poel was better. For a moment I thought I’d be overtaken, but luckily I still finished with them.”
