“It’s not nice to offend someone, but it happens. Jonas is the best climber,” says Pogacar
Many topics were covered by Pogacar in yesterday’s press conference, especially the rivalry with Vingegaard
those about his rivalry with Vingegaard, the “Fu** you” shown in the Netflix series directed at the Dane, and the Olympic-style final stage.
ON VINGEGAARD – “I think Jonas is in great shape and I believe he’s the best climber in the world, currently as well as in recent years. On the longer climbs, he’s one of the best, if not the best, and even in time trials he can be really strong—sometimes better than me, sometimes not. The past five years have been intense between me and Jonas; it’s a great rivalry that will repeat itself this year as well. We’ll see if we swap positions again.”
ON THE “FU** YOU” – “It’s not nice to offend someone, but in sport it often happens that you say something you later regret. It happens a lot in the peloton—there are many tense moments, especially when you’re fighting for the most important races. There has been tension between UAE and Visma in the past, that’s normal, and it’s also something that makes sport interesting. But there is great respect between us.”
ON THE FINAL STAGE – “For me, it won’t make a huge difference. There will just be a bit more stress, combined with the fatigue of the three weeks and the transfer the day before. The general classification should already be defined—it’s likely that there will be mutual respect among the riders and that it won’t be a crazy stage. For sure, it’s not the easiest route, the roads will be narrow, and it will require even more focus than in past years.”
