€2.5 million up for grabs at the Tour de France – here’s how the prize money is divided
The specific prizes for each classification and for stage victories
If the Giro d’Italia can count on a prize pool of €1.5 million, the Tour de France has almost €1 million more, making it clearly the most lucrative race of the entire season. There’s also a huge gap with the Vuelta, which offers around €1.1 million, less than half. Here are the specific prizes awarded:
The winner of each stage will receive €11,000, with half going to the second-place finisher, and €2,800 to the third. The last rider awarded will be the 20th, for a total daily prize pool of €28,500. The biggest prize will obviously go to the Tour winner, who will earn €500,000, with €200,000 going to the second and €100,000 to the third. The last rider awarded will be the 160th, who will receive €1,000. The yellow jersey wearer each day will receive just €500. In total, the final general classification has a prize pool of €1,128,800.
€25,000 is the prize for the green jersey winner and for the polka-dot jersey winner, while those who wear the jerseys each day will receive only €300. The same amount goes to whoever wears the white jersey, though the final white jersey winner will receive only €20,000, the same amount awarded to the most combative rider of the Tour.
The best team overall will earn €50,000, while the best team per stage will get €2,800. There are also 3 special KOM prizes (for the first rider over the Col du Tourmalet, the Col de la Loze, and the first to reach 50 KOM points) for a total of €15,000. The best domestique of the week will receive €2,000, and the best domestique of the entire Tour will get €3,000.
