The details of what is, for now, the transfer of the century in the world of cycling

The other day we talked about what will likely be Evenepoel’s salary with his new team: Red Bull Bora-hansgrohe. We’re looking at around €20 million over 3 years (about €6.7 million per year) or €8 million per season, depending on the source. But in addition to this amount, the German team also had to pry him away from the Belgian squad, with which Remco still had one year left on his contract.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the figures are enormous. The compensation had been estimated in recent weeks at around €2 million, but according to the Italian newspaper, thanks to Belgian laws, the bank transfer received by Soudal Quick-Step would be much higher. In fact, to terminate a contract in Belgium, you must pay the team at least the rider’s salary for the remaining years of the contract. This would mean around €5–7 million according to La Gazzetta.

In addition to this, there’s the extra compensation that would push the total to €8–10 million — a record-breaking amount never seen before in cycling. If the €4 million paid by Ineos Grenadiers to Movistar for Carlos Rodriguez seemed high, here we’re talking about a figure worth at least double, showing just how much the world of cycling has changed in recent years.
