Twist: Vingegaard will not take part in the World Championships, here is his end-of-season program

Jonas Vingegaard’s participation in the World Championships in Rwanda seemed almost certain, given that the course was tailor-made for riders like him: pure climbers. Yet, the Dane stated in one of the press conferences ahead of the Vuelta a España that he will not be at the start of the rainbow race.

The decision comes as a surprise, especially considering the words of national coach Mørkøv, who had said that Jonas was interested in the world title and that he hoped for his availability for the event. However, Vingegaard has decided not to go to Rwanda after the Vuelta, as he feels he won’t have enough time to properly prepare for the World Championships. He will nonetheless wear the national jersey just a few days later at the European Championships in France, on a demanding route that resembles a northern classic and also suits riders like Van der Poel.

There are not many other details about the rest of the Dane’s season, but one certainty is his absence from Il Lombardia, which he will skip again this year after already missing the past two editions.
