The Vuelta a España begins today with an all-Italian opening stage (as will the next ones), starting from the Royal Palace of Venaria and finishing in Novara, covering 186.1 kilometers.

The favorites for the first stage can only be the sprinters—the few lining up at the start. Keep an eye on Jasper Philipsen, Mads Pedersen, Ben Turner, Ethan Vernon, Orluis Aular, and Casper Van Uden. Italy’s hope rests on Elia Viviani, perhaps facing the last big tour of his career. The fact that only a handful of teams may be interested in a sprint finish leaves a small chance for a surprise attack in the final kilometers, though this remains highly unlikely.

The start is scheduled for 12:45 p.m., with the finish expected around 5:30 p.m.
