Pogacar protests: “This relegation is a real joke” over the decision against Van Poppel at the Deutschland Tour

The Slovenian defends Danny Van Poppel, winner of the third stage of the Deutschland Tour before the penalty

There’s been a lot of debate over what happened today at the Deutschland Tour. The stage winner at the finish line was, by several meters, Danny Van Poppel of Red Bull – Bora-hansgrohe, before the jury decided to penalize him, stripping him of the victory (which went to Søren Wærenskjold).

The Dutchman was deemed guilty of making some overly abrupt deviations in the sprint that nearly caused Matthew Brennan to crash, shutting the door on him and taking away his chance to contest the win. For Van Poppel, this is yet another penalty of the season after several yellow cards already collected earlier in the year.

Coming to the Dutchman’s defense was Tadej Pogacar, who commented on his Instagram profile: “The clear winner of today’s stage. This relegation is a real joke and unfair. And it’s not the first time it has happened this year! Congratulations Danny, for me you are the winner.”
