Ayuso could leave UAE: many rumors link him to a top team

The Spaniard wants a change of scenery, and rumors about his departure keep circulating

Juan Ayuso’s future is still a puzzle. His contract running until 2028 theoretically ties him to UAE Team Emirates, as does the massive release clause in the deal (rumored to be around €100 million). However, the Spaniard is eager for a change of scenery, which is why he recently switched agents, and speculation about a potential move is growing stronger.

A few weeks ago, three teams were mentioned: Ineos Grenadiers, Movistar, and XDS-Astana. All three are looking for a new grand tour leader after the successes of past (long past) seasons and recent disappointments. The rumors linking Ayuso to these squads have since cooled, while another option seems to be gaining momentum.

According to Ciro Scognamiglio of La Gazzetta dello Sport, talk of Ayuso joining Lidl-Trek is becoming increasingly persistent. The team of Milan and Pedersen, among others, lacks a proven leader for the grand tours—someone who can always line up with real ambitions to win. Ayuso appears to be the rider identified to fill this gap.

What remains a mystery is how the UAE rider could actually make the move to Lidl-Trek given his contract until 2028—whether by pushing the issue with the UCI (as Derek Gee is currently doing) or by reaching an agreement with the team (which still brought him to the Vuelta as co-leader).
