The first interview with Baroncini after the accident: “I remember almost everything. In a few months I see myself…”
Filippo’s words to *La Gazzetta dello Sport* between the accident and the hope for the future
The crash at the Tour of Poland was bad, really bad. The consequences were serious, but they could have been much worse—and Baroncini is well aware of that. The UAE Team Emirates rider spoke to the press for the first time about the accident in La Gazzetta dello Sport, which published the interview today, coinciding with his discharge from the hospital—today or at the latest tomorrow.
After the coma, the immobilization to avoid any possible movement during the transfer from Poland to Italy, and the delicate surgeries he underwent, Filippo is finally doing better. He’s back to eating some solid food and already has the ambition to recover and return to racing as soon as possible.
Below are some excerpts from the interview with Ciro Scognamiglio of La Gazzetta dello Sport. At the end you’ll find the link to the full interview.
ON THE CRASH – “I remember almost everything. Up until the moment, basically, when I was sedated. Diego Ulissi was in front of me, and another rider too. It was a nasty downhill section, because it was very narrow. At that point…”
THE DYNAMICS – “Basically, a fairly sharp corner appeared, and that’s where I hit the gravel. I crashed, bounced, and as I came back I also hit my vertebrae a bit. And I felt pain.”
THE FIRST IMPRESSION – “I immediately felt the impact on my ribs, because I was struggling to breathe. I could move my legs well, so from that point of view I was calm. But in my face I could feel that something wasn’t right. And thank goodness that by just a matter of millimeters nothing happened to my eyes…”
THE HOPE – “I see myself in a few months in front of a mirror, reflecting and saying to myself, ‘what an animal I am.’ In the sense of grit, of the desire to put myself back together. There are unfinished business to settle. This will be the turning point, the definitive turning point. To come back, and in a big way.”
