Ayuso very harsh against UAE and even talks about dictatorship: “I don’t agree with the statement”

The Ayuso–UAE Team Emirates issue continues to make headlines after the Spaniard, speaking to journalists at the start, harshly criticized the team, calling it a “dictatorship.” He raised many criticisms, both about the general environment and about the statement the team released—especially the way it was published without informing him in advance.

Here is his version of events:

“I don’t agree with the team’s statement. Yesterday the statement was released around seven in the evening. They informed me at 6:30 p.m., when some journalists I have a good relationship with told me that at lunchtime they had already been told it would be released. We had agreed on what was important for us in the statement and that it would be made public at the end of the Vuelta, so as not to influence the sporting side, the atmosphere, or my teammates in any way.

The fact that it was published yesterday is something I think you should ask them, and why so suddenly without any warning… Obviously, it’s clear to me why they did it: to damage my image, as in part emerges from the statement, which, as I said, I don’t agree with. They talk about values and unity, things I also strongly agree with. Yesterday they also took advantage of some unfortunate words I had already discussed with Joao. He apologized to me because he somewhat agrees with what happened.

I want to help. Yesterday I wasn’t feeling well, he understood that. But obviously, when there’s been one failure after another from the team management, it becomes difficult to build unity and want to integrate. So, out of respect for my teammates and the good relationship I’ve had with them over the years, I’d like to finish this Vuelta a España in the best possible way, and I’m very glad that at least you also know this. As I said, my relationship with my teammates, including Almeida, who is often talked about, is good.

He deserves all the support and the work of the other six riders. He also deserves my contribution, as much as I can give. And I’ll try to do that. I would have liked to finish well with the team because during all the negotiations before the Vuelta we tried to find an agreement. But it seems that it isn’t possible. It’s more like a dictatorship and unilateral power.

We had agreed that the statement would be released at the end of the Vuelta so as not to influence either me or my teammates, and the fact that everything was done yesterday in half an hour without warning… I don’t understand. Then, in the half hour I had, I said I didn’t agree with the statement, and the response was that the first draft they had written was much worse and that I should be happy about it. Well, fine then…”

He ended with: “Next year I think will be a very beautiful year. A new beginning and… I’m happy.”
