The words of Petilli after the crash caused by protesters in the middle of the road: “If this goes on, our safety…” (VIDEO)
The Italian rider was the only one to crash and spoke out on his social channels about what happened
Protests against the presence of Israel – Premier Tech at the Vuelta a España continue, and yesterday it wasn’t the Israeli team that paid the price, as in the team time trial, but Simone Petilli. The Intermarché – Wanty rider crashed after some protesters jumped into the middle of the road as the breakaway riders were coming through first, followed shortly after by the peloton.
Some cyclists had to swerve to avoid them, and this caused a crash in the middle of the bunch which, fortunately, involved only the Italian rider—though it could have been much worse. Petilli later commented on what happened through his social channels; these were his words:
“I understand this is not a nice situation, but yesterday I crashed because of a protest on the road… Please, we are just cyclists and we are doing our job, but if this goes on our safety is no longer guaranteed and we feel in danger! As I said, please let us do our job—yesterday I got hurt, because crashing at 50 km/h is not pleasant… We just want to race!”
