Shocking: Vuelta “called off” due to protesters at the finish line, historic precedent
The protesters’ demonstrations prevented the Vuelta a España from finishing (and taking place) as usual
The Vuelta a España today has no winner. Times were taken at 3 km from the finish line, after which the race was neutralized due to the disturbances that occurred near the finish.
Pro-Palestinian protesters had forced their way through the barriers at the finish, which had already led to a long line of police being deployed to guard the area. For this reason, the peloton was not allowed to pass under the finish banner (except for Pidcock). Likewise, no award ceremony took place.
This is a historic precedent that could have serious repercussions both on this Vuelta (with the possible exclusion of Israel-Premier Tech) and on other sporting events, given the protesters’ success.
