The words of Federica Venturelli, Lorenzo Finn, and coach Marco Villa after today’s time trials
Today’s protagonists commented on their medal-worthy (or almost) performances
Today was a bittersweet day for the Italian national cycling team. On one side, the joy of Federica Venturelli’s splendid third place; on the other, the disappointment of Lorenzo Finn’s fourth place—by just 4 seconds—both competing in their respective under-23 time trials.
Here are the words of the riders themselves and coach Marco Villa, shared on the official website of the Italian Cycling Federation:
VENTURELLI – “It was a tough race, not very well-suited to my characteristics. The final climb, in particular, was really hard. The race went well. I tried to keep my own pace. When I crossed the finish line in second place, I didn’t get my hopes up—in fact, I was convinced others would overtake me. Getting on the podium was a surprise and a source of pride, as it always is when representing Italy.”
FINN – “The race was tough. I’m sorry about missing the podium, but I take home important feedback for the road race. Yesterday I spoke with Cattaneo, who gave me some valuable advice. I like the atmosphere in the national team—we push and help each other.”
VILLA – “It was a positive day: Federica Venturelli made it to the podium, and Mark Finn came very close. We know we have a group of athletes capable of doing well, and today we had confirmation of that. I feel sorry for Finn. It’s hard to accept fourth place after such a performance. Apart from the winner, the rest were all fighting for the podium within just a few seconds. His performance bodes well for the road race, especially considering this is his first year in the category.”
