The words of Ganna and Evenepoel after the European Championships time trial: “Today’s race was unusual because the radio wasn’t…”

There were doubts about Remco Evenepoel’s condition after Sunday’s World Championship and the (long) return flight from Rwanda, yet just 72 hours after taking silver in the road race, the Belgian dominated the time trial at the European Championship. Right behind him was a great Filippo Ganna, while a surprising Niklas Larsen finished third.

Here’s what Evenepoel and Ganna said after the finish:

EVENEPOEL to Eurosport – “This victory means a lot. Being the holder of every possible time trial title was a big goal at the start of the year, but given the problems I had over the winter, I wasn’t sure I could make it. Today’s race was unusual because the radio wasn’t working: I realized it right away when I didn’t hear any instructions from my sports director in the first kilometers.

Only 1.5 km from the finish, at the start of the last climb, it came back on and they told me I had 20 seconds on everyone else: at that point I was basically sure I would win, but I still gave everything until the very end.”

GANNA to SpazioCiclismo – “He’s the world champion and now the European one too, so there’s nothing more to say. For sure the wind didn’t help me—looking at the big riders I was the only one to finish up front, while I think Remco weighs 60–70 kilos.

I definitely recovered well after the Vuelta, but he too, after six and a half hours of racing and 6000 meters of climbing, managed a good recovery, so congratulations to him. Tomorrow we’ll see how the mixed relay goes.”
