Pogacar speaks of his future competitors after today’s victory: ‘I told Alaphilippe that…’

Tadej Pogačar won again — this time, however, without attacking from very far out as he did at the World and European Championships. The Slovenian made his move on a descent, still from a distance, and started well on his return to racing wearing the classic rainbow jersey of the UAE Team Emirates.

Tadej’s participation in today’s race was confirmed only in recent days, as Pogačar kept the promise he made to the organizers a year ago (when the race was suspended and canceled). These were Tadej Pogačar’s words, also speaking about the new generations, to Spaziociclismo microphones:

“Our plan was to wait for the final lap and keep a good pace before that, but Tudor decided to make the race hard very early, so it exploded from far out. Del Toro and I attacked on the climb, and it went well. It was a great situation for us — we knew no one would cooperate much, and when I saw I had gained a few meters on the descent, I went all-in on the flat because I knew that even if I blew up, Isaac would be behind to win, either in a sprint or maybe even solo.

It was a good situation, we took advantage of it, and it worked out well. Il Lombardia is a big goal, and I’m very motivated to perform there. It’s a Monument, one of the most important races of the calendar, and I’m confident my legs will still be good. I told Alaphilippe on the podium that I felt old next to Philipsen — and imagine how he must have felt next to us!

The new generations are coming… Seixas has been impressive all year, and Philipsen is also very strong. Cycling will keep evolving over the next few seasons. For me, having new competitors can be an extra motivation — they’ll surely give me a hard time in the future.”
