Juan Ayuso criticizes Italy and France: “I don’t understand why they decided to…”

He was among the top favorites for the win, or at least for the podium, but in the end Juan Ayuso had to settle for sixth place, almost five minutes behind Pogacar. The Spaniard, who ultimately didn’t have the legs to follow Seixas and Scaroni — even being caught by Skujins — criticized the attitude of Italy and France.

According to Ayuso, the two national teams decided not to pull in the small group with him, Evenepoel, Scaroni, and Seixas. Instead, they chose to pull behind, where a larger group was trying to close the gap, effectively canceling any chance of catching Pogacar, who was still within sight. These were his words after the finish:

“We could still see Pogacar, but there wasn’t much cooperation with Italy and France — I don’t know why. I don’t understand why they decided to pull behind in the group instead of working with us. It doesn’t make sense to me, but I don’t know, that’s cycling in the end. I tried to help Remco, but I was also on my limit, and it was tough. In the end, he was the strongest in our group.”
