Elia Viviani’s Track World Championship was perfect: one last race to close out his career, and one last victory — a world title, no less. For this reason, the rider from Verona chose to celebrate with an “X,” symbolizing the end of a remarkable career.

Roberto Vannacci, a Lega MEP, however, interpreted the gesture differently, tweeting: “ANOTHER DECIMA FOR ITALY! Elia Viviani, world champion in track cycling, celebrates his title this way.” Assigning a political meaning to a celebration that clearly did not intend one.

For this reason, speaking to Bicisport, Elia addressed the situation: “Those who know me and know cycling are fully aware of what that gesture means — there’s no need to even explain it. As for that tweet, I’ll consider whether to take action in the coming days, since I’ve just returned from vacation.”

In the meantime, it has been announced that Viviani will return to the track one last time from November 18 to 23 in Belgium, at the Six Days of Ghent, where he will compete in the Madison paired with Jasper De Buyst.
