What does the future hold for Mattia Gaffuri? He could sign with a WorldTour team
The Swatt Club rider is expected to remain among the professionals and could do so in cycling’s top category
After many years first among the Under-23s, then the amateurs, and now with a stagiaire experience at Team Polti-VisitMalta, Mattia Gaffuri’s future could finally lie in the professional ranks — possibly even in the WorldTour.
According to Beppe Conti on RadioCorsa, the Swatt Club rider could be joining Team Picnic PostNL. Such a move would reward all the hard work he has put in over the past few years, capped off by some excellent results this autumn with the team of Ivan Basso and Alberto Contador, despite only being a stagiaire.
That same team has already announced that its roster is closed, so it’s certain we won’t see Gaffuri racing with them again. Now, we just have to wait for the possible official confirmation of the 1999-born rider’s signing with Team Picnic PostNL. He would become the third athlete to move directly from Swatt Club to the WorldTour — and the first to do so without previous experience in cycling’s top category.
