“Between the 2026 Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia, I would rather win…” Vingegaard talks about next season, Pogacar, and his condition

The next season could be the one of the Triple Crown for Jonas Vingegaard, and there’s no point in hiding it. The Dane has already won the Tour de France twice and the Vuelta a España once, with only the Giro d’Italia missing from his palmarès.

This is why his possible participation in the Giro has been discussed for months, even though no final decision has been made yet. What is clear is that Vingegaard would be happy to race the Giro in an attempt to win it, but also that the Tour will always remain the top priority for the team. In an interview with La Dernière Heure, the Dane explained which of the two races he would rather win, while also speaking about Pogacar and his level after the 2024 crash. Here are his words:

ON GRAND TOURS:
“Winning all three Grand Tours or the Tour de France in 2026? I think I’d rather win all three Grand Tours. The Giro is still missing… But we still haven’t decided if next season’s schedule will include it. We still need to discuss it with the team. The Tour obviously remains the main objective. But now it’s about understanding whether we can manage to combine both things next year.”

ON POGACAR:
“Sometimes Tadej Pogačar really looks unbeatable. He is very strong and is without a doubt the best rider in the world right now. But if you told me he was unbeatable, that would mean I give up. So I won’t say that. I think I still have at least a chance to beat him.”

ON THE CRASH:
“I’m still working on my progression and I feel like I have returned to the level I had before the crash at the 2024 Tour of the Basque Country. It takes more time than I thought to get back, but right now I can push the same watts as before the crash. And I feel I still have room for improvement. But maybe that’s also true for him…”
