Sivakov opens up and talks about Pogacar and Seixas: “Paul is like Tadej, they have the ability to…”
The French rider talked about his career, focusing on his struggles and the differences between himself and some champions
A few years ago, Pavel Sivakov seemed destined to become cycling’s next big star, as shown by his 2019 results: a top 10 finish at the Giro d’Italia and victories at the Tour of the Alps and the Tour de Pologne. However, he hasn’t quite lived up to those expectations — something he recently discussed in an interview with cyclingnews.com.
According to Sivakov, his main issue was not listening to himself and always wanting more, which eventually led to stress and prevented him from performing at his best. This, he says, is the key difference between him and some of modern cycling’s top champions, such as Pogacar, Thomas, and even the young Seixas. Here’s what he had to say:
THE COMPARISON WITH THOMAS AND FROOME — “I saw Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome always doing more. I was the young guy and wanted to do the same. Then you start getting too stressed. You train too much, diet too much, maybe crash too much. It becomes a vicious circle. I’m lucky to have a good engine and some talent, so I can always perform here and there, but I’ve never been consistent. I think some riders grow very quickly. They manage to do it faster, and it’s easier for them. For me, the career path has been longer and slower.”
THE COMPARISON WITH POGACAR AND SEIXAS’ WORDS — “Tadej has the ability to stay calm and not get stressed. I’m not like that — I used to stress over small details, and that slowed me down. Paul Seixas is like Tadej and Geraint Thomas. He’s not like me, he doesn’t overthink. He’ll have pressure, but that’s part of his journey. After getting to know him, I think that as long as he enjoys racing, he’ll be fine.”
