How much did Onley cost Ineos Grenadiers? (Spoiler: a lot)

Now it’s official: Oscar Onley will move to Ineos Grenadiers at the end of December, in a deal that is decidedly atypical for old-school cycling. The British climber, fourth at the most recent Tour de France, pushed for the transfer, and the financial difficulties of Picnic PostNL only helped facilitate the deal.

According to what was reported by Daniel Benson in his Substack, it was the nearly 6 million euros offered by Ineos Grenadiers that convinced the Dutch team—an amount sufficient to cover any financial difficulties Picnic PostNL might face over the next few years.

This is yet another football-style transfer in the world of cycling, a sport that was once alien to this kind of deal. Just a few months ago, Remco Evenepoel moved from Soudal Quick-Step to Red Bull Bora-Hansgrohe for around 7 million euros, slightly more (even though his contract was due to expire sooner).
