The words of Pogacar and Vingegaard after today’s stage
Here are the post‑stage statements from the two main favorites for the overall victory
A great show was expected from the top contenders, but today’s stage saw neither major attacks nor significant gaps. The headwind certainly played a role in limiting long-range attacks, and despite Sivakov’s issues following Almeida’s withdrawal, UAE managed to defend well against Visma’s (not very aggressive) moves.
Here are the words of Pogacar and Vingegaard, who climbed together behind Lenny Martinez after a nice attack from Pogacar on the final ascent.
POGACAR – “I had great legs, and the team managed the situation perfectly. In the end, there was no real difference with Visma | Lease a Bike. They tried a lot during the stage, but I don’t think the climbs were hard enough to make a real difference.”
VINGEGAARD – “We have a really strong team and my legs are feeling good. We wanted someone in the breakaway and Simon was there. It’s incredible that he won the stage. It was an amazing day for us. I’m happy with my legs; it was a good day. UAE has a very strong team, and even Pogacar had to work hard. We weren’t attacking to make Tadej lose the yellow jersey, we were attacking to put him under pressure. If he had kept the jersey, he would have had to go on the podium every day and that would have cost him some energy, but we weren’t thinking too much about that. We were following our plan, which was to pressure UAE. We have a very strong team and my legs feel good. Of course, it was a tough day, with ups and downs all day and a lot of heat. I’m really happy with how we raced. I’m still behind Tadej and I need to make up time. I’m in better shape than I was at the Dauphiné and I’m making progress.”
