The words of Pogacar, Vingegaard, and Evenepoel after the uphill time trial
The statements of today’s main protagonists after another spectacular stage of this Tour de France
If yesterday didn’t convince someone, well… here comes yet another incredible feat by Tadej Pogacar. The Slovenian wins and convinces once again, reaching 4 victories in this Tour de France, increasingly securing the yellow jersey with a lead of over 4 minutes on Vingegaard. Meanwhile, the crisis continues for Evenepoel, who loses almost 3 minutes to Pogacar and is even overtaken by Vingegaard at the finish line.
Here are the words of the three protagonists after today’s uphill time trial; while Evenepoel is clearly disappointed, the same cannot be said for Vingegaard, who is recovering after yesterday:
POGACAR – “I chose to race without a radio, I simply wanted to give everything. I only relied on the times I saw at the intermediate checkpoints. Already after a few kilometers I saw that I was in the lead, and that really motivated me; then, at the second intermediate, my lead was even bigger, and that’s when I realized my pace was good. I raced on instinct, I knew I couldn’t blow up in the final part but in the end I came really close: I managed to recover a bit, then gave everything on the last ramp. I’m very happy, this time trial had been a big question mark since December: I wanted everything to be perfect, and the team helped me a lot. This morning I felt good, I was relaxed, I prepared in the best way. I chose to ride with the normal bike because that’s the one I use in 99% of the races, and it worked.”
VINGEGAARD – “I’m happy that I managed to bounce back. What happened on the Hautacam? I don’t really have an answer for that, to be honest. I felt pretty good until the last climb but then my legs just gave out. Yesterday I didn’t reach my usual level. Yes, it was my second bad day in this Tour, I don’t know how it could have happened. Usually, it doesn’t happen to me. Today I was back at my usual level. I keep believing in myself and I’ll keep trying. The team is very strong and now we have to show it, the Tour is not over yet.”
EVENEPOEL – “I didn’t have the legs I wanted. I noticed it after the first 4–5 minutes. I felt empty. I had prepared well, but yesterday didn’t go well and today went even worse. I didn’t focus on Vingegaard. It’s a really bad performance.”
