The Soudal Quick-Step explains why Evenepoel withdrew and talks about his next goals

Both he and the team were hoping that Thursday had just been an off day; however, yesterday’s uphill time trial was not a good sign

The most surprising news of the day can only be Remco Evenepoel’s withdrawal from the Tour de France. The Belgian rider was sitting in third place in the general classification and was still wearing the white jersey, even though Lipowitz was very close behind him. After two difficult days, Evenepoel was dropped again today already on the Col du Tourmalet, with more than 100 km still to go before the finish line.

At that point, he and the team decided to put him in the car and withdraw him from the race in order to safeguard the other goals of the season. Since it would have been very hard for Remco to stay in contention for the podium, it made more sense to leave the Tour and rest, given that it’s clear something hasn’t been working these past few days. The one who explained the reasons for the withdrawal, how he’s doing, and his upcoming goals was Soudal Quick-Step’s DS Steels, speaking to Eurosport:

WHY HE WITHDREW
“It was the third consecutive day that he wasn’t feeling well. You hope for the best, you hope the situation changes. But it didn’t. He didn’t have the legs to handle the difficulties. In that case, it’s wiser not to continue and to recover properly. He still has goals this year. If you keep going in these conditions, you risk losing the rest of the season as well.”

UPCOMING GOALS
“He’s a former road cycling world champion and the current world time trial champion. I believe these are the next goals he has to focus on. You need to make the decision in time, because you feel something isn’t right. He’s not himself. When you don’t feel well for the third consecutive day, you have to be very careful and not push too hard.”

CURRENT CONDITION
“We need to see what’s going on. He might get sick in a few days. Or maybe something else will happen. But we’ll see. We hope he can recover quickly and get back to training soon.”
