Alaphilippe really believed he had won, and his sports director explained why.

Unusual scene in today’s stage finale, with the Frenchman celebrating as if he had won (but he actually finished third)

Unusual episode at the finish line of today’s Tour de France stage. Julian Alaphilippe raised his arms as if he had won the stage after beating Wout Van Aert in the sprint for third place. Commentators from every broadcaster were quite astonished, and it wasn’t clear why the Frenchman celebrated a third place. Was there some hidden reason, or did he really think he had won?

The situation was explained by Raffael Meyer, Alaphilippe’s sports director at Tudor, who said live on Eurosport:
“Julian Alaphilippe thought he had won the stage. After the crash, his radio was no longer working.”

What’s peculiar is that while Tim Wellens had won with almost a two‑minute lead—so Alaphilippe might not have been aware of him—just a few seconds ahead of that group came Campenaerts, clearly visible to Alaphilippe and the others on the final straight.
