Despite feeling unwell, Johannessen will start today: here’s what he experienced yesterday
The images had raised concerns about Johannessen’s condition but, fortunately, his issue was less serious than initially thought
The images of Tobias Johannessen at the Mont Ventoux finish had alarmed everyone, as seeing oxygen being administered to a cyclist is never a pleasant sight. The Dane was then taken to hospital, but both the team and Danish TV had already reassured everyone that his condition was not as serious as it might have seemed.
It was the team, through a detailed statement about what happened yesterday, that explained exactly what had occurred and announced that he will start today despite everything:
“After thorough examinations, the medical team concluded that Tobias suffered from severe stomach cramps during the final kilometers of stage 16 to Mont Ventoux. Thanks to the quick and professional intervention of the race doctors, he received immediate treatment upon arrival. All necessary procedures were followed, which made the situation appear even more critical at that moment.
As part of the emergency treatment and in accordance with established procedures, Tobias was given oxygen and 500 ml of saline solution intravenously. The treatment was administered by the race’s medical staff as part of the emergency care and was reviewed and approved by the UCI medical personnel.
He felt much better after a few minutes, but as a precaution he was transported by ambulance to the Tour de France medical truck and then to the emergency room at Centre Hospitalier Carpentras. An ultrasound, X-rays, blood tests, and an ECG were performed, all of which showed no abnormalities. Tobias is fine and will start stage 17 today.”
