Movistar earned a massive sum from Ineos Grenadiers for Carlos Rodriguez: the details
After initially letting him slip away, Ineos managed to keep the Spaniard by paying a record-breaking fee for cycling
Carlos Rodriguez never actually joined Movistar, yet the Spanish team earned a massive sum from Ineos Grenadiers. Why? The cyclist had already reached a valid agreement with Movistar, but the British team stepped in—after initially letting him slip away—to keep him on their roster.
According to the Spanish outlet 2Playbook, Ineos paid €4 million to Movistar to retain the 2001-born rider, who had just secured an impressive fifth place at the previous Tour de France. This deal reportedly took place during the 2023 transfer window, with Carlos Rodriguez then signing a contract through 2027.
By doing so, the British team managed to hold onto their only reliable rider for stage races, as there were no suitable replacements left on the market. Meanwhile, the Spanish squad received a crucial financial boost—vital for a team that has been struggling economically for several seasons.
Unfortunately for Ineos, bad luck struck: Rodriguez has had a tough year due to multiple injuries and may not return to racing before next season, after suffering a fractured pelvis at the Tour.
