Cycling transfers: after 12 years, Stuyven bids farewell to Trek while Attila says goodbye to Visma

It’s August 1st, and as usual, the teams have released the first official transfer news of the season. In previous years, teams were not allowed to issue official statements before August 1st, but although this rule has been lifted this season, most teams have still respected the traditional date.

The first surprise move is Jasper Stuyven’s departure from Lidl-Trek after 12 years. The Belgian rider will join Soudal Quick-Step at the age of 33, with the goal of winning Paris-Roubaix — a race where he could no longer be considered the team leader due to Mads Pedersen’s presence. Stuyven also aims to win a Tour de France stage, as he stated himself, and will support Tim Merlier in the sprints, much like he did for Jonathan Milan in recent seasons.

Stuyven has signed a contract until 2028 and marks the first major move for Soudal Quick-Step, which is expected to reshape its roster following the likely departure of Remco Evenepoel at the end of the season. The Belgian team must find new top-level leaders to bounce back after a few disappointing seasons in the classics, partially offset by Remco’s performances.

Another, less surprising, move is Valter Attila’s transfer from Visma | Lease a Bike to Bahrain Victorious on a three-year deal. The Hungarian impressed early in his career but struggled to find space in the Dutch squad in recent seasons. Now he has a fresh opportunity to relaunch himself at Bahrain, where he’s expected to get many more chances.
