Filippo Conca joins Jayco-AlUla after Swatt Club: his words and debut date
After weeks of speculation, it’s now official: the Italian champion returns to the WorldTour
A little less than a year ago, Filippo Conca was living every professional cyclist’s nightmare: after years as a domestique, no one was offering him a contract, and his pro career was about to end at just 25/26 years old. An absurd situation for a rider with his results as an Under and a past stint in a WorldTour team before his experience at Q36.5.
Then came a last chance with the Swatt Club, as had already happened with Hellemose, and with just one big goal in mind: the Italian National Championships. We all know how it went—he took a victory that will remain in Italian cycling history, crowning the incredible work of Swatt Club with all the riders affected by the current system, widely criticized but with very few actually fighting to change it.
After that win, Filippo Conca was back in the spotlight and managed to return to the professional ranks with a contract running from now until the end of 2027 with Jayco-AlUla—the same team that had put its trust in Hellemose and now also secures the Italian road race champion. The presentation photos (at the end of the article) already show him in a fully tricolour jersey. His debut will take place at the Circuit Franco-Belge on August 15.
Here are the words, first from Filippo Conca and then from Brent Copeland:
CONCA – “I’m really happy to join Team Jayco AlUla. I chose this team because I’m sure I’ll find the ideal environment to work hard. Before making my decision, I consulted my colleagues and the staff, and everyone told me that at Jayco AlUla I would find a family capable of supporting me both personally and professionally. My dream is to take part in the Giro d’Italia wearing the Italian champion’s jersey. I think it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I want to thank Team Jayco AlUla for the trust they have placed in me; I’m sure I’ll repay it.”
COPELAND – “Filippo clearly has great talent, as shown not only by his victory at the Italian Championships but also by his past results. Unfortunately, his professional career has been marked by a series of difficulties that have caused several setbacks and prevented him from showing his true potential. Now we are pleased to offer him all the support he deserves to achieve his goals. I would like to personally thank Carlo Beretta and his Swatt Club team for facilitating Filippo’s transfer and for giving both him and us their full support. It has been a pleasure dealing with Filippo and his team, and we look forward to working with him.”
