Girmay may leave Intermarché-Wanty: UAE and another team are interested in him

The Eritrean could be one of the most sought-after riders in this transfer window.

The future of Biniam Girmay is a puzzle, just like that of his team, Intermarché-Wanty. The French outfit is expected to merge with Lotto to create a new team that would race under Lotto’s license, leaving Girmay the chance to walk away “for free” and look for a new team for 2026.

According to HLN, Girmay could still remain with the team (or rather, whatever it becomes) that has believed in him over the past few years. However, two teams have already been linked to him. One is Tadej Pogacar’s UAE Team Emirates, which is likely to lose Molano, making Biniam a potential new sprinter for the squad.

The other team is Israel-Premier Tech, currently dealing with the delicate case of Derek Gee. To fill the almost certain gap left by the Canadian, the Israeli squad could secure one of the peloton’s best sprinters/classics riders. At present, this seems to be the team closest to signing Girmay, though the situation is still evolving and nothing is set in stone.
