First true mountain stage at the Vuelta with a summit finish: favorites, schedule, and elevation profile
The road will climb — and quite a lot — in today’s stage, with the general classification contenders as the big favorites for victory at the finish
The Vuelta a España will feature today the first true stage for pure climbers, after the opening days between Italy and France, with a summit finish at Pal Arinsal in Andorra. On the menu are about 3,500 meters of elevation gain over a course of roughly 175 kilometers, ending at 1,901 meters above sea level.
The riders will face four categorized climbs: two first-category, one second-category, and an opening third-category climb. The final ascent is 9.6 kilometers long with an average gradient of 6.3%, making the general classification contenders the clear favorites for today’s stage. Keep an eye on Vingegaard, Ciccone, Almeida, Ayuso, Gaudu, Bernal, and all the other climbers.
It remains to be seen whether Vingegaard will choose to give up the red jersey to avoid all the extra commitments he has to face every day, such as interviews and podium ceremonies.
The stage will start at 12:54 and is expected to finish around 17:30.
