Change of plan: great news for Italy ahead of the elite races
Italy will be able to count on all the cyclists eligible for the elite races, unlike what had been previously stated
The Italian cycling national team will bring the maximum contingent in both elite races, men’s and women’s. This is a change from what had been communicated in recent weeks, when it seemed the team would line up a reduced contingent with, for example, 5–6 riders instead of the possible 8 in the men’s race. Italy will therefore be one of the few complete national teams.
In addition, the Italian squad plans to field at least one rider in every event, including the youth categories. This choice sets Italy apart from many other nations that have decided not to bring any young riders (or just a handful) due to the high costs of traveling to Rwanda.
Here are the words of president Cordiano Dagnoni, followed by team manager Roberto Amadio.
DAGNONI – “The Federation has never considered limiting its opportunities. I want to thank Secretary General Tolu and Team Manager Amadio for the excellent work that makes it possible to keep costs under control while still guaranteeing full and high-quality participation. This year too, we will be one of the largest delegations, present in every category and with concrete hopes of good results.
I want to stress that giving up some professional roles was not an easy decision, as these are highly important figures. Thanks to everyone’s commitment, the staff and personnel will still provide excellent support to the athletes.”
AMADIO – “Since the Tour, the results achieved have changed the technical perspective. Over the years, we have always made our choices based on actual possibilities, and this year as well, on such demanding courses as those in Kigali, we have adjusted accordingly.
Based on this principle, unlike other countries, we have chosen to be present even in the junior categories. As for the elite races, it’s clear that the situation has changed in the last few days, and it was natural to plan for maximum commitment.”
