Vingegaard’s words after withdrawing: “It was more to see how…”
The Dane commented on his off day, explaining why he still decided to start the race
A three-way battle for the European champion title was expected between Tadej Pogačar, Remco Evenepoel, and Jonas Vingegaard. In the end, the first two fought it out — just like at the World Championships in Kigali — while the Dane was never really part of the contest, dropping off very early.
This was, however, Vingegaard’s first race after the Vuelta — and also his last of the season — with widespread doubts about his physical condition. Despite pulling out far from the finish, Vingegaard calmly analyzed what happened. Here are his words to Feltet.dk:
“I had hoped for more, but sometimes it’s just not your day, and today it wasn’t. Maybe it’s because of the heavy race schedule, maybe the form isn’t there. I don’t really know. But it definitely wasn’t my day. I already suffered on the first climb. I thought it might get better, but when the pace increased, it was too much.
It’s not that I’m losing confidence — it depends on how you prepare. I didn’t have the best preparation for this race. It was more to see how I would react and to represent Denmark. If I prepare properly, I can be competitive in these kinds of races too.”
