Evenepoel promises a fight: “How to beat Pogacar? I don’t have to…” and then “We can predict where he’ll attack…”

In recent days, Tadej Pogacar has stolen the spotlight with a string of victories — the World Championships, then the European title, and most recently the Tre Valli Varesine. He dominated the first two, crushing nearly all his rivals. Yet, whether one admires him or not, Remco Evenepoel has been finishing his season like a true champion — consistently close to the Slovenian and far ahead of everyone else.

The Belgian, however, is as ambitious as ever — and rightly so for a former world champion and double Olympic gold medalist. As always, he refuses to give up and still talks about winning Il Lombardia. These were his words, reported by Spazio Ciclismo, during the press conference:

“Il Lombardia is at the top of my wish list. I’m getting closer and closer — after last year’s second place, I hope to finish even higher. I feel like I’ve been racing at a high level these past weeks. Compared to Tadej, it’s hard to say. He obviously raced very well when he won both championship events. But I’m very satisfied with my form. Tomorrow I’ll do my best to get as close as possible to victory.”

“How to beat Pogacar? I must not put too much pressure on myself. I need to save energy for the race and build on my own strengths. Everyone knows how strong he is, but I’ll also have to stay alert and read how the race unfolds. Everyone will want to beat him, with or without special plans. Of course, it’s possible to beat Pogačar — otherwise, I wouldn’t be here. It’s a tough race, but there’s also a long flat section near the end. We’ll see how it goes. I’m feeling very good. It’ll be important not to waste too much energy early on. It’s definitely a finale where you can’t give up.”

“In previous editions with this route, [Pogačar] has always attacked on the final climb of the Passo di Ganda. In recent weeks, he’s already shown that once he attacks, it’s hard to stay with him. So we can predict where he’ll make his move — but much will depend on how the race develops up to that point.”
