Today’s race was a special one for Evenepoel. The Belgian closed a circle by finishing second in the same Monument where, five years ago, he nearly lost his life. The same classic that was his first Monument both as a professional and with the Wolfpack.

It was also his final race with the Wolfpack team, which he now leaves behind after years filled with success and tough moments. These were Evenepoel’s words after the finish, speaking to SpazioCiclismo:

“I will definitely remember the two motorbikes that almost crashed in front of me on the last climb. It was a very hectic moment because I was going quite fast, and having to stop on a 15% climb is never pleasant. There was a bit of panic at that point, even with the team car, but my advantage over Storer was big enough to avoid any trouble. In the end, everything turned out fine.

We raced well — we put a teammate in the early break, which was the plan. Mattia, Serry, and the other guys protected me all day long; I never had to worry about positioning or anything else. At the start of the descent, we were in a good spot, and overall we didn’t make any mistakes. My positioning for the penultimate climb was perfect too, right on the UAE riders’ wheels, so everything went really well.

When Tadej attacked, the pace had already been very high for several minutes, and it was impossible for me to respond. I rode my own rhythm, climbing at my pace, and reached the top with Storer and Simmons, then dropped them on the descent, so I can be satisfied.

I’m very happy with how I’ve raced over the past month and a half — it was the right way to end both the season and my time with this team. I’m proud to have been the captain of this team, of the victories we achieved, and as I said this morning, I was going to give my all one more time — and that’s exactly what I did. I’m someone who always fights until the end. I’m satisfied with how these seven years have gone. I’ll carry them with me forever, but now it’s time to start a new adventure.”
