Scaroni doesn’t understand UAE’s decisions: “I found it to be a ‘not very human’ choice…”
The Italian rider from XDS-Astana didn’t quite understand the choice made by the Emirati team
In one of the last races of the season, the scenario was the same as it’s been since the start of the year: total dominance by UAE Team Emirates. Today they took first, second, and third place at the Trofeo Tessile & Moda, which finished on the Oropa climb. However, this dominance wasn’t well received by Christian Scaroni, who criticized it after the finish.
These were the words of the XDS-Astana rider, who finished fourth behind Adam Yates, Rondel, and Jay Vine, as reported by SpazioCiclismo:
“When we hit the climb, my legs started to feel better, but UAE were really strong and had the numbers. They began attacking left and right, and when Yates and Rondel went clear, I wasn’t sharp enough to follow. Chumil and I started pulling, more thinking about the podium than trying to catch Yates.
I had spoken and asked if they could let us have the podium, but unfortunately, they wanted to take even the third place. When they’re that strong, it is what it is. I fought for the podium, but when I tried to close the gap to Vine, I always had Sivakov on my wheel. I’m disappointed because a podium would have given our team some visibility.
When they told me they wouldn’t even leave the podium spot, honestly, I found it a ‘not very human’ choice. When you’ve already won the race, I don’t see why you should take away visibility from a team like Burgos or from us. Anyway, it’s their choice. Agree with it or not, everyone races their own race, and they did what they were asked to do. That’s fine.”
