Pogacar was beaten by an amateur at his “Pogi Challenge” yesterday
Less than 24 hours after Il Lombardia, the Slovenian enjoyed himself on the roads of his home country during the event organized by his foundation
After his quadruple streak of victories at the World Championships, European Championships, Tre Valli Varesine, and Il Lombardia, Tadej Pogacar has “lost” a race again — even if it wasn’t an official one. It happened at his own “Pogi Challenge,” a charity event held in his native Slovenia, where he raced against over 1,000 amateur cyclists who had signed up to take part.
The course was quite simple: 24 kilometers in total, with the first 9 being flat, followed by a 15-kilometer climb averaging a 7.6% gradient. It’s a climb close to Pogacar’s heart — it was right here that he won his very first race back in 2009. Tadej started 5 minutes behind the others and, accompanied by his teammate Novak, began catching up with nearly all the amateurs, kilometer after kilometer.
Out of 1,187 participants, Pogacar managed to overtake 1,186 — but one got away: Andrew Feather, a 40-year-old British cyclist well known for his incredible climbing ability. He was the only one, perhaps surprisingly, to cross the finish line before Pogacar, with a total time of 44:15, while the Slovenian finished in 40:44.
According to Domestique, when asked whether UAE Team Emirates should offer Feather a contract, Pogacar laughed: “Our team is already full,” he said. “But if someone can climb that fast, someone could always use him. Maybe he never wanted to become a professional. Everyone has their own path.”
