Vingegaard explains what happened at the European Championships and looks ahead to 2026: “The World Championships are…”
The Danish champion has spoken again about the European Championships and the World Championships at an event with the Danish press
Jonas Vingegaard has spoken again about the season that just ended, focusing on what happened at the European Championships. What was supposed to be a major three-way showdown between Pogacar, Evenepoel, and Vingegaard turned into a duel between the first two, with the Dane pulling out while still far from the finish line.
Jonas explained why he wasn’t at his best that day, also discussing why he didn’t go to the World Championships. He admitted that the rainbow race could be a goal for next year. These were his words, reported by Feltet:
“I’m happy I gave it a try. But above all, I’m happy I didn’t take part in the World Championships—it would have been an even bigger disaster. It would have been a waste of time for me and for everyone else. I wasn’t able to train for two weeks because I was simply too tired. It was actually during the World Championships that I was able to start training again.
Obviously, we had hoped I could do better. Training before the Europeans had gone well and given us hope, but that’s not how it turned out. It’s clear I would have liked to perform better, and I freely admit that. But I showed up at the start, and I’m really happy about that. It also shows why I withdrew on other occasions—it was because I was simply exhausted and had nothing left to give.
So I just hope that instead of always saying ‘Jonas doesn’t feel like racing for the national team,’ people understand there’s a reason I don’t show up. Clearly, if I were to take part in the Europeans or the World Championships, I wouldn’t do it if I had to race both the Tour and the Vuelta. I’d prefer to prepare properly. The World Championships are definitely a race I’d like to participate in next year, but it will also depend on how the rest of my season goes.”
