New shake-up for the national team: Viviani arrives as Team Manager and Villa is no longer the head coach

The new structure of the Italian cycling national team, completely overhauled when it comes to the road sector

After just one year, a new revolution hits the Italian road cycling national team: Marco Villa will no longer be the head coach, despite excellent results at the World and European Championships. Roberto Amadio will take his place, while Villa will return to focusing on Time Trial and Women’s Track.

A new role also arrives for Elia Viviani, who has just retired and will now serve as team manager for both the track national teams and the road national team. Here are the statements from the President of the Italian Cycling Federation, Viviani, Villa, and Amadio — all published by the Federation in its official release:

Cordiano Dagnoni:
“I would like to welcome, on behalf of the entire movement, Elia Viviani, who is joining the technical structure in a role that will allow him to offer his great experience to the National Teams. We have appointed Roberto Amadio as the elite road head coach, so that Marco Villa, as planned, can focus on two sectors (time trial and women’s track) in which Italy places great Olympic hopes. I am certain that this new structure will allow each head coach to work more effectively within a group that, as I stated at the beginning of my first term, moves and thinks as a single team.”

Elia Viviani:
“I’m grateful for the trust placed in me by the Federal Council and I hope to live up to the responsibility. The Federation was my home as an athlete for many years; this role will be a challenge but above all an opportunity for me to grow and learn as a manager.”

Marco Villa:
“I accepted the position of elite road head coach knowing it would last one year — the time needed to reorganize the sector with a broader perspective than a single season. On several occasions, I’ve said that the Time Trial and Track are important commitments that deserve the right dedication. The 2028 Olympics are not that far away, and it is right to concentrate all our attention on these two strategic areas.”

Roberto Amadio:
“It is a great honor for me to lead the National Team. We will build on the excellent results achieved this season and on the many young riders who are developing. I thank the Federal Council for its trust.”
