Van der Poel wins but doesn’t shine: “As I said in recent days…”. The video of the crash

After months away from racing, both on the road and off it, Mathieu van der Poel returned by winning the Cyclocross World Cup in Namur. In truth, however, the Dutchman did not have a great day, so much so that everything was still up for grabs until the final lap.

The world champion himself admitted it after the race, giving the following statements, reported by Wielerflits:

“Here it’s always difficult, and as I said in recent days I’m still a bit behind in terms of form compared to other years. Nys, Vanthourenhout and Van der Haar were very strong: I decided to wait until the end to make my move, and in the final lap I felt good. I’m happy to have won.

I decided to wait and see what would happen. I crashed because of a mistake in a corner that I couldn’t correct: I made too many mistakes while riding on the wheels, sometimes it’s easier to be at the front. But I always felt in control, every time a gap opened up. From a technical point of view, the last half lap was the best part of my race.”
