5th Tour or 1st Roubaix? Winning all three Grand Tours in one year? Pogačar speaks out

Yesterday, UAE Team Emirates announced the programme of its leaders during the traditional pre-season press conference, which also left room for several questions. The answers that made the most noise were obviously those of Pogačar, who probably surprised some people.

The Slovenian spoke openly both about the Paris–Roubaix question—stating that he would prefer to win the Monument rather than a fifth Tour de France—and about the hypothesis of winning three Grand Tours in a single year, a topic that had been widely discussed a year and a half ago after his Giro–Tour double. Here are his answers on the matter, as reported by Tuttobiciweb:

TOUR OR ROUBAIX?
“If I had to choose between winning my fifth Tour de France or my first Paris–Roubaix, I would choose Roubaix without any doubt. There is a bigger difference between zero and one than between four and five. The record is not important, but at the same time I don’t want to feel stressed or obsessed by these two races either, even if they represent a great challenge for me. So I might even never win them.”

THREE GRAND TOURS?
“Winning three Grand Tours in one year? I don’t want to be that greedy. But naturally I think this is possible. However, we have to consider that we have riders in our team who can win all the Grand Tours, and if it were only me winning, then conflicts would arise. João Almeida, Isaac Del Toro and Adam Yates: they are all riders capable of winning a Grand Tour.”
