After the split with Israel-Premier Tech, Derek Gee one step away from joining one of cycling’s top teams following weeks of silence. According to Daniel Benson, the Canadian could be heading to Lidl-Trek’s training camp in the coming days to begin preparations for next season.

Initially, when he decided to part ways with the Israeli-Canadian squad, it seemed that Gee already had an agreement with INEOS Grenadiers, who are now reportedly close to signing Oscar Onley (as we discussed here). Supporting Benson’s report are both the still-available roster spot on the American team — with only 29 riders announced out of the 30 allowed — and the plans of the team’s leaders.

Juan Ayuso and Matthias Skjelmose have already announced their intention to target the Tour de France, leaving a spot open for the Giro d’Italia. It is precisely in this race that we could see Derek Gee as team leader for an increasingly ambitious Lidl-Trek, possibly aiming for a podium finish after placing fourth a year ago.
