Change of plans for Van Aert? Will he be at the World Championships?
Wout Van Aert’s cyclocross programme could still change, or at least that’s what the Belgian national coach is hoping. In theory, Wout had ruled out the World Championships in Hulst from his schedule in order to focus on the road, but there may still be hope for his presence at the start of the rainbow jersey race.
These were the words of Angelo De Clercq to HLN regarding a possible appearance by Van Aert: “It’s not completely ruled out. Not only is Wout important for us from a sporting point of view, but also for the young riders, who look up to him. In every selection I make, I write his name in pencil. Around the time of the Belgian Championships it will be clear what he will do.”
Fueling the hopes of the national coach and Belgian fans is also the fact that Visma | Lease a Bike’s training camp, scheduled from 12 to 24 January, does not overlap with the World Championships, which are set for the first day of February. In previous seasons, the Belgian has already chosen to line up for the world title race despite having just finished a road training camp.
